Thread starter odavlias Start date Mar 7, Forums Hardware Components. You should hear the fan inside the power supply begin to run. Some versions of the Coolmax PS tester don't require that you hold down the power button, but others do. Just because the fan is running doesn't mean that your power supply is supplying power to your devices properly.

Also, some power supply fans don't run when being tested even though the PSU is fine. You need to continue testing to confirm anything. Confirm the LCD on the power supply tester is lit, and you see numbers in all the fields. If any voltage reads "LL" or "HH" or if the LCD screen doesn't light up at all, the power supply isn't working properly; you need to replace it. You're just looking at the LCD screen at this point, so don't worry about any other lights or voltage indicators not located on the actual LCD readout.

Check Power Supply Voltage Tolerances and confirm that the voltages reported by the power supply tester are within approved limits. If any voltage is outside of the range shown, or the PG Delay value isn't — ms, replace the power supply. The tester is designed to give an error when a voltage is out of range, but you should check yourself to be safe.

If all the reported voltages fall within tolerance, you've confirmed that your power supply is working properly. If you'd like to test the individual peripheral power connectors, continue testing. If not, skip to Step Turn off the switch on the back of the power supply and unplug it from the wall. Don't connect more than one of these peripheral power connectors at a time. You probably won't damage the power supply tester doing so, but you won't be accurately testing the power connectors either.

Both of the motherboard power connectors that you connected to the tester earlier should remain plugged in throughout these tests of the other power connectors. Plug in the power supply and then flip on the switch on the back if you have one.

If not, replace the power supply. Repeat this process, beginning with Step 11, testing the voltages for the other power connectors. This ensures that the magnitude of the voltages do not rise or fall to abnormal levels that would risk the proper operation of the delicate computer circuits. The computer processor is designed to monitor the power and only start operations once all the required power conditions are met.

This avoids the possibility of the computer starting on unstable voltages which can damage the mother board components and other computer devices such as hard disks.

Once the power supply is turned on and stabilized its designed output voltages with no faults, the power good signal is sent to the processor to inform the computer that the supply is operating well and all required voltages and currents are available for the proper operation. Unless the PG value is "faked", I don't see the danger in this value being slightly high, as it is still preventing the system from operating unsafely.

Seasonic certainly isn't going to fake this value, especially on any decent 80plus units. Of course, it could be said that if the value isn't within the ms spec, there's got to be something causing it If I bought a brand new, retailed boxed item, sure I'd contact the manufacturer just to ask what's going on IMO, this is kind of a big deal, because we want our systems fed with reliable power but we've reached a point where there are so many unused, unpurchased high quality power supplies floating around out there for dirt cheap, that its almost crazy not to buy these for a fraction of the cost of identical brand new units.

I've wondered the same. I don't think they put any load on the PSU, so it seems they only serve to give a very basic indicator of the rails being within spec. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

OPL3 FM vs. Roland MT vs. I have had power supplies that completely fail voltage tests with my tester unless I have a load on them, I think I used a hard drive and something else I thought it was DOA when I got it it was used , but it is perfectly fine once it has a load on it. Sadly, its extremely loud for my tastes.
