The vacancy left by TVD will be filled by Season 4 of the show's spin-off, The Originals , which will premiere a week later on March With the exception of Monday nights, which will remain the same and see Supergirl lead into Jane the Virgin , the network is rearranging its entire schedule to make room for its newest drama, Riverdale , and the season premieres of returning series The , Reign and iZombie.

Elena willingly went into that sleep to ensure her best friend would have a long life, giving Dobrev a clear exit. Damon and Stefan had already become a large focus of the first six seasons of The Vampire Diaries , so they were given an even more central role after Dobrev left. Despite Dobrev's departure, Elena's presence loomed over the rest of the series. Therefore, it was only natural for the former star of The Vampire Diaries to return in for the series finale.

In order to fully leverage Dobrev's guest role, the final episode, "I Was Feeling Epic," even included a cameo by Elena's doppelganger, Katherine. Much of the episode focused on the characters attempting to break the sleeping curse, and visiting Elena in her trapped state between life and death. Vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore, battle for the affection of selfless teenager, Elena Gilbert. Stefan is the good and kind-hearted brother that feeds on animal blood to keep from killing anybody, and Damon is the selfish and dangerous older brother that feeds on human blood carelessly.

Elena is brought into the supernatural world that she was hidden from as a girl and surrounds herself with a circle of human AND supernatrual friends, ready to fight the hunters and enemies that wait for them in the shadows.

As Elena, a doppelganger sharing a striking resemblance to Katherine Pierce the love interest of Salvatore brothers Stefan and Damon , suffers from the death of her parents, she starts to think that she will never be happy again. Soon after, a hot new student shows up, Stefan Salvatore, and they fall instantly in love despite her knowing nothing about his past. Stefan's older brother Damon shows up to keep good on his promise to ensure him an eternity of misery and ends up falling in love with Elena, too.

On her birthday, Damon gives Elena back a necklace she cherishes, and that's the moment she realizes she loves him.
